Split over stimulus defines candidates
On Nov. 4, 2008, Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin was in an enviable position.
The Democrat had just handily won another term, capturing every county in South Dakota — her second consecutive landslide win. Speculation turned to whether she would stay in her House seat or turn her sky-high popularity to another prize — running for governor, or even challenging Republican Sen. John Thune.
